Figure out the right cooling solution for you and your home

  • The Aussie summer is famous around the world for being hot and humid, but in reality it varies from region to region. That's why you need to know your options when it comes to keeping cool and comfortable

The Australian Summer is famous around the world for its unbearable combination of warmth and humidity. Reality is though, weather conditions vary from region to region - making some cooling appliances work more or less effectively as others in certain locations or conditions.

Refer to the table below for a quick comparison between all of the possible cooling solutions available within our range. Knowing your options will allow you and your family to stay comfortable during even the most unbearable days, whilst still using energy efficiently.

Advantages Considerations
Evaporative Coolers
  • One of the most efficient cooling methods in hot, dry weather
  • Naturally humidifies air, reducing symptoms associated with dry air like itchy eyes, throat or skin
  • Environmentally friendly as there are no refrigerants involved in the cooling process
  • Must be run with as many doors and windows open as possible to get rid of the hot air trapped inside the house
  • Requires appropriate water levels to keep the moisture pads wet
  • Water must be refreshed regularly
 Inverter Reverse Cycle Split System
 Air Conditioners
  • Heating, cooling and dehumidifying functions in the same unit
  • Great at providing precise temperatures, our iSeries fluctuates only by ±0.2˚C
  • More energy efficient than other non-inverter air conditioners
  • Both the indoor and outdoor units must be installed by a qualified professional
  • It is important to choose a model that suits the heating and cooling capacity needed for the room size
  • Only for permanent applications
 Window / Wall
Box Air Conditioners
  • Installation is easy, as they fit into a window frame or wall cut out
  • More affordable than other non-portable air conditioning appliances
  • Great for either temporary or permanent applications
  • It is important to choose a model that suits the heating and cooling capacity needed for the room size
  • If replacing an existing unit (cut out size), finding the correct size/capacity can be challenging
 Portable Air Conditioners
  • No installation needed
  • Easy to move around from room to room
  • Easy to set up and operate
  • Must be placed near a window suitable for the exhaust pipe
  • It is important to choose a model that suits the heating and cooling capacity needed for the room size
 Air Circulators
  • Used in conjunction with air conditioners, they circulate cool air around the room faster
  • Used in conjunction with heaters, they distribute hot air around the room faster
  • Compact size and 360° horizontal oscillation
  • Choose the model that best suits your needs (with or without remote control, timer, electronic display, etc.)
 Pedestal &Floor Fans
  • Usually low power consumption
  • The lowest initial investment from all cooling solutions
  • Rather than cooling down the room, they create a chilling effect on the skin which makes you feel cooler

Regardless of your lifestyle, home, or budget; we offer hundreds of products nationwide to help you keep comfortable through the toughest of Australian climate conditions.

Portable Evaporative Coolers

These appliances work on the principle of adding moisture to outside air in order to cool it down, and then pumping it throughout the house. Hot, dry air is capable of absorbing more water; allowing an evap cooler to run at its most effective.

If you live in a place with warm temperatures and low relative humidity levels in the air during Summer (think central WA, NT, western QLD, northern SA / VIC, and eastern NSW), you may want to consider our 6L Evaporative Cooler to keep cool in an eco-friendly and cost-effective way.

Evaporative cooling also requires to leave open as many windows and doors as possible, allowing hot air trapped inside your home to escape - they’re perfect for houses with lots of open spaces and alfresco areas. You can even use them in semi-open areas like terraces or warehouses!

Inverter Reverse Cycle Split System Air Conditioners

All split systems consist of 2 main parts: the outdoor and the indoor unit. Essentially, the former contains a compressor that circulates refrigerant necessary for heat exchange, while the latter houses the air blower used to distribute or absorb heat inside the home.

Thanks to Inverter technology, the latest development to operate the compressor at variable speeds, split systems are nowadays capable of providing more precise, maintainable temperatures. Our iSeries splits for example, only fluctuate within ±0.2˚C of the set temperature.

Inverter air conditioners are also more energy efficient than its non-inverter counterparts. Our iSeries for example, reduces energy consumption by utilising a magnetic force to operate the compressor. After reaching the set temperature, the inverter automatically slows down and operates at the minimum required capacity to save you even more energy.

A consideration to have regarding split system air conditioners is whether you want to have cooling and heating or just cooling. A reverse cycle unit might need a bigger investment, but can be used for cooling in Summer and for heating in Winter.

Places in Australia’s northern coast with relative high humidity are perfect to install one (or many) of our iSeries split systems, because of their dehumidifier function. Moreover, they will also work well in the temperate climates of Victoria and Tasmania. For most home owners, an inverter reverse cycle split system air con will be the best option to stay comfortable all year round.

Before purchasing a split system air conditioner, remember to calculate the wattage you need. This will depend mainly on the size of the room you want to install it in, but other factors like draughts or insulation will also play a part in the efficiency with which this air con operates. It is better to choose a model with equal or slightly greater capacity than needed.

Window / Wall Box Air Conditioners

A Window/Wall box air conditioner, or “boxie” for short, will fit seamlessly into a window frame or wall cut out. Their easy installation overcomes two of the biggest limitations of split systems: labour cost and the need to locate a suitable space for the outdoor unit.

Box Air Conditioners are correspondingly cheaper to other non-portable air conditioning appliances, making them suitable for rooms or homes where other solutions are not right. Whether reverse cycle (both cooling and heating) or cooling only, our Window / Wall Box Air Cons also offer you extra comfort features such as sleep mode, electronic timers, swing function and remote controls.

Portable Air Conditioning

Many people don’t have the possibility of fitting a split system or a “boxie” into their homes. This is where portable air conditioners come into play; appliances easy to set up, operate, and wheel around on built-in castors to bring comfort to wherever you need it.

To make them extra convenient, we recommend you to find portable air cons which offer dehumidifying functions or avoid the need of drip trays or drainage hoses, such as our range.

Please remember that all portable air conditioning units need to be placed near a window suitable for the exhaust pipe. Reason why, all Dimplex portables come with a window kit included, appropriate for sash and sliding windows - so regardless of the model you choose, you will have everything you need to start using it straight away.

Air Circulators

Try picturing an appliance the size of a desk fan but capable of blowing air up to 20 metres away. In essence, air circulators are compact fans aerodynamically designed to create a jet stream draught that helps you to get rid of hot and cold spots in the room, circulate stale air with fresh air from an open window, amongst other benefits.

Our WhirlTech air circulators are also unique, providing a 360˚ horizontal oscillation that allows you to make an entire room feel more comfortable faster. They can be used on their own for cooling and ventilation purposes, or in conjunction with your existing air conditioners and heaters to help circulating and distributing the cool or warm air coming from them faster.

Pedestal & Floor Fans

These home appliances will make you feel cooler because of the wind chill they create on your skin. Fans have been the cheapest and easiest way of cooling in hot countries for years, and Australia is no exception.

Fans are less expensive as an initial investment than air conditioners, and their power consumption is usually lower than that of other cooling appliances. When choosing a fan, take care on choosing a model that moves a sufficient volume of air per minute, like our High Velocity air flow fans. Last but not least, an oscillating function allows the head of the fan to move automatically, helping you spread the love around during a hot Summer day.
